Lily Allen is still practically a baby, born on May 2, 1985 — but you’d never know it by her musical prowess. When she was fourteen, she ran away from home and left school to work on performing and perfecting her music. She later posted some of it on MySpace, where it got a lot of attention. Then, the record label, Regal Recordings, took notice and signed her to a contract. Her first album, Alright Still, put her up for a Grammy and other awards. It shows a lot of ska and reggae influences and made Allen an international star.
But with her new album, It’s Not Me, It’s You, this English star’s music takes a more Britpop turn. It debuted at spot 1 in the UK albums chart, and it’s easy to see why. Here’s why I think so: First off, Allen’s songs are clever and witty. They contain a lot of rhyme with reason and make you laugh a lot. They also, in a poppy way, sometimes show her dissatisfaction with life, loves and relationships. Take, for example, one of the top selling singles off the album, “F*** You.” Basically, with this song, as you might imagine, she’s just telling off the guy she’s been seeing, claiming he’s a total creep and a real loser. She wants to get rid of him, but can’t. It’s hilarious. The other single so far is “The Fear.” This one shows her fears and how she doesn’t know how well she can cope with stardom. She says, “Life … is all about fast cars… It doesn’t matter ’cause I’m packing plastic,” where she says she’s a massive consumer. She doesn’t know how to feel about this either. “Everything’s cool ’cause I’m getting thinner” points out how obsessed we are with images, too. It’s a fantastic song to which you can dance. And it has her signature humor. Another great thing about this special edition is that it comes with a DVD packed with concert footage from Shepard’s Bush Empire where we see her energy, smiling face and love of what she does. She shows us nine songs from the concert and they add impact to the CD because you can now picture how she sings, the way she flirts and plays with the huge audience, etc. The DVD also contains a track by track interview with Allen about the backgrounds of the songs and how they came to fruition. It’s really fascinating to hear the stories behind all the songs. Sadly, Allen claims she doesn’t think she’s going to make any more money making songs and is taking a 2 year hiatus from recording in order to open a clothes rental shop and create a record label. I wish she wouldn’t keep us waiting for more so long!
Jake Scully is a hot tub expert who also loves music, especially female singers. This album is one of his favorites of recent times.
