Positive Results for Used Oil Recycling Numbers

Sustainability is an often-used buzz-word these days and can apply to everything from farming to energy production. Nowhere is the term more applicable than in the area of used oil recycling. While pulling new crude oil out of the ground is unsustainable, since the supplies are limited, re-refining used oil by cleaning out contaminants to produce a product just as pure and as functional as the original is something that can be done again and again. This is true sustainability and the public is becoming more aware of the importance of used oil recycling, both environmentally and economically.

Important Used Oil Recycling Numbers To Consider

With used oil recycling becoming an ever-important consideration worldwide, and especially here in Alberta and Saskatchewan, the growth of the industry has been impressive in the past decade. The goal is to eventually collect and recycle 100 percent of the oil being used. The technology being used and the organization within the industry continues to improve. Most helpful, however, is a better public understanding and wider acceptance of the need to recycle rather than improperly disposing of used oil products.

In Alberta, used oil recycling continues to improve every year. Consider these figures:

In 2001-2002, nearly 65 million litres of used oil were recycled.

In 2010, nearly 90 million litres of used oil were recycled.

By the middle of 2011, that number jumped to more than a billion litres.

Since 1997, when Alberta instituted its Used Oil Recycling Program, more than 1.15 trillion litres of used oil has been collected and recycled in the province.

In addition, during this same time period, more than 98 million used oil filters were collected and recycled for their oil and steel content. Contaminated plastic oil containers amounting to more than 23 million kilograms also found their way to various recycling facilities.

Can We Do it All?

While we re not quite yet recycling 100 percent of the used oil in Alberta, we re steadily making headway. As businesses realize that used oil isn\’t a liability but can actually represent an additional income stream because it can be sold to commercial collectors/recyclers, they\’re much more prone to do the right thing, both for the environment and for their bottom lines.

Smaller businesses and individual consumers are becoming aware of the great impact improperly disposed of oil plays on the environment, which is helping them to properly recycle rather than otherwise dispose of used oil, oil filters and empty plastic containers. It only takes one litre of used oil to contaminate one million litres of fresh water. A typical oil change in your car takes about five litres of oil, meaning that five litres of used oil comes out and it s your choice what will happen to that oil.
